MAUMEE, Ohio, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA), an accredited, online public charter school for Ohio students in grades K-12, accepted 18 new members to its National Honor Society (NHS) chapters this month. An online ceremony was held on December 3, 2014, to celebrate the new inductees and current members.
Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student, and is based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership and character. Once a candidate is voted into the NHS, he or she must attend monthly meetings, maintain a GPA of 3.8 or higher, uphold all school rules, participate in a community service project, and complete 50 hours of personal community service each school year.
OHVA launched its National Junior Honor Society chapter for the middle school in 2008, and later began an NHS chapter in 2010. Over the past 6 years, the OHVA chapters have supported The American Red Cross and Toledo Children's Hospital, in addition to raising funds for a Hurricane Sandy Drive and completing a 1,000-letter campaign to support a fellow OHVA student battling cancer.
"The OHVA National Honor Society chapter is a great opportunity for me to work with my peers and give back to our Ohio community," said OHVA senior Aaron Lyman, who designed the artwork for the chapter's social media page.
During the upcoming school year, the OHVA NHS chapter aims to focus on those in need in Ohio and continue its work with the American Red Cross for the annual Spring Blood Drive. As a virtual school, with students statewide, OHVA has the ability to hold multiple drives across Ohio at the same time, reaching more people in need.
OHVA provides core courses in Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Music and Art, as well as elective world language courses, while the high school program offers leveled core, elective, and Advanced Placement® (AP®) courses. All students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular social and academic clubs. In past years, OHVA has been the recipient of a BusinessWeek Parent's Choice award, and in February 2012, AdvancED approved OHVA as meeting their standards for quality schools.
"Our annual National Honor Society induction is a welcome opportunity for us to celebrate the academic strength of our students," said Kristin Stewart, Head of School at Ohio Virtual Academy. "But our NHS and NJHS chapters go beyond pure academic achievement. We strive to recognize the total student, which includes a commitment to leadership and service both in and out of the classroom."
Enrollment is still open for the OHVA 2014-2015 academic school year, and all interested families are encouraged to visit www.k12.com/ohva for more information, as well as details on upcoming community events and online information sessions.
