OJP's Leadership Supports Re-entry Efforts at Recidivism Forum – In remarks at the State Leaders' Forum on Re-entry and Recidivism on Thursday, December 8, Assistant Attorney General Laurie O. Robinson, Office of Justice Programs, said, "We're here today to share what we've learned, and to think about what elements should be part of our future plans for reducing recidivism. We need to begin developing explicit strategies that will help us meet the expectations the public has for us. We've done a great job orienting corrections and the criminal justice field as a whole around re-entry. Now is the time to commit to public safety as our collective goal."
BJS Releases Jails in Indian Country, 2010 – According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, nationwide, the number of American Indians and Alaska Natives under correctional supervision in the U.S. declined by less than one percent between 2009 and 2010. Over 60 percent (48,700) of American Indians and Alaska Natives were on probation or parole, about 19 percent (14,940) were held in state prison, 4 percent (3,258) in federal prison, and 13 percent (9,900) in municipal or county operated local jails. At midyear 2010, Indian country jails held about three percent of the estimated 78,900 American Indians and Alaska Natives under correctional supervision in the U.S. http://www.bjs.gov
NIJ Examines Challenges of Organized Crime – The National Institute of Justice recently announced the availability of the NIJ Journal #268, examining roles of research in fighting international organized crime.
