Attorney General Holds Public Hearing on Children Exposed to Violence – In remarks at the National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence on Tuesday, November 29, in Baltimore, Md., Attorney General Eric Holder, said, "As a former judge and U.S. attorney, and now as the Attorney General and the father of three teenagers, protecting and empowering our children is both a personal and professional commitment. I have made protecting the most vulnerable among us – including our children – a core priority of the Justice Department and this task force brings together a wealth of experience and talent to help us find ways to improve our response to the growing problem of children exposed to violence." This was the first of four public hearings to gather expert and community testimony on the epidemic of children's exposure to violence. The task force will hold the remaining three hearings this year in Albuquerque, N.M., Miami, Fla., and Detroit, Mich.
Justice Department Announces Campaign to Combat Intellectual Property Theft – The Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance, along with the National Crime Prevention Council, recently announced a new public education campaign to combat intellectual property (IP) theft. The campaign includes "It Hurts," an online video that demonstrates how IP theft is stealing; "Premonition," a television PSA created in partnership with MTV Networks that illustrates how IP thefts link to gangs and other criminal activities, as well as radio and print ads and campaign materials delivered via social media tools – videos, podcasts, and web banners. http://www.bja.gov/.
BJS Releases Identity Theft Reported by Households, 2005-2010 – An estimated 8.6 million households had at least one person age 12 or older who experienced identity theft victimization in 2010, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released report, Identity Theft Reported by Households, 2005-2010. This was an increase from the 6.4 million households victimized in 2005. The report found that the unauthorized use of an existing credit card accounted for much of the increase in household identity theft from 2005 to 2010. The number of households experiencing the misuse of an existing credit card rose from about 3.6 million in 2005 to 5.5 million in 2010. http://www.bjs.gov/.
