OEConnection Sponsors Contest Designed to Encourage 'Next Generation' Software Engineers
Area High School Students Compete in Computer Programming Contest
RICHFIELD, Ohio, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- OEConnection LLC, the leading online parts and service exchange within the automotive industry, served as the major sponsor for a computer programming contest held on the main campus of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea.
Twenty-two teams of students from 13 area high schools participated in the competition which required them to write computer programs to solve a series of increasingly difficult problems. Computer science students from Baldwin-Wallace managed the competition, including creating the problems and outcomes, manning the scoreboard and judging system, and presenting a prize to the winning team. Baldwin-Wallace College hosted this contest for a seventh consecutive year in an effort to encourage local students to pursue computer science at the college level.
"This contest exposes high school level students to computer problem solving activities which can help ignite a passion for studying math or computer science in college," said Susan Penko, the Baldwin-Wallace professor who helps organize the annual competition. "Math and computer science skills are vital to the future growth of our economy."
Area companies like OEConnection depend on skilled software engineers and programmers to maintain and grow their business, and can find that they are in short supply. "Investing in the development of technology talent is not only a worthwhile endeavor, it is critically important to future growth of northeast Ohio," said Charles Rotuno, OEConnection President & CEO. "The Programming Contest represents an investment in the region's economy and we are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with B-W in sponsoring this event."
This year's winning team was from Solon High School.
