HOUSTON, Sept. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ODL has been awarded a contract by Shell Offshore Inc ("Shell") to develop customized eLearning and competence solutions for its Olympus tension leg platform (TLP) development in the Mars field, Gulf of Mexico. The contract award also includes the delivery of facility-specific system operating manuals (SOMs) and procedures.
A Wood Group PSN (WGPSN) business, ODL will develop and publish over 50 eLearning courses specific to the Olympus TLP, which is located approximately 130 miles south of New Orleans.
The eLearning courses cover facility-specific modules to educate operators about all systems, equipment, instrumentation & controls, and procedures for startup and shutdown of the facility. To enable effective operation, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance, ODL will develop materials that include interactive learning exercises, a library of site-specific photos, narrated videos, animations and 3D illustrations to enhance operators' overview of the facility and piping.
ODL will also deliver facility-specific system operating manuals (SOMs), including safety and environmental management system (SEMS) compliant operating procedures. The information contained in the SOMs and operating procedures will provide the foundation for the eLearning courses, which will be accessible to all operators working on the Olympus TLP.
ODL has a long-term track record of providing services to Shell but this is the company's first contract with Shell in the Gulf of Mexico.
Jim Molloy, training and competence manager at ODL said: "Our SOMs and eLearning packages are facility-specific and we are developing materials that are exclusive to Shell and the Olympus TLP under this contract.
"We are using a new breed of eLearning tools to offer a flexible and interactive learning experience for operators and are delighted that Shell recognises the value of these solutions for such an important project.
"Our customised eLearning solutions can be easily uploaded to the client's existing learning management system, which allows for multiple system integration and enables the client to upload and assign course content, without additional hosting costs.
"eLearning solutions are being extensively used across the oil & gas industry in environments where it is not always convenient to host and deliver learning through traditional classroom instruction methods."
Along with the facility-specific training content and procedures required by the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), ODL's eLearning solutions offer Shell the option of testing the knowledge and skills of the individuals completing the course. Shell also has to option to assign eLearning courses to individual employees, track progress of completions and maintain an auditable history of training compliance and competence.
