OceansLIVE broadcasts historic voyage of Charles W. Morgan July 11-13
Live web coverage from America's last remaining whaleship
PROVINCETOWN, Mass., July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- OceansLIVE will broadcast from deck of the Charles W. Morgan, the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, July 11-13 during the whaleship's historic voyage to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
The Morgan, a National Historic Landmark built in 1841, is visiting historic New England ports as part of its 38th Voyage project. While in the sanctuary, the Morgan crew will team with NOAA to conduct outreach activities highlighting the sanctuary's role in whale conservation and ocean research.
OceansLIVE will broadcast interviews and commentary with historians, scientists, authors and artists discussing the shift from whaling to whale watching and conservation in New England.
American whaling ships once roamed the world's oceans by the thousands, pursuing whales for their oil and baleen. The Morgan is the last remaining ship afloat from this once vast fleet and is on a new mission this summer to help protect the same whales she once hunted.
Presented by NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, OceansLIVE streams live programming on ocean topics, bringing the ocean to communities nationwide through a multi-media approach.
OceansLIVE Morgan broadcasts begin at 10 a.m. Eastern, Friday, July 11, with "A Whaleship Among Whales," live from the deck of the Morgan. Topics over the three days include "Danger Zone: Threats to Whale Survival," "Historic Ships of the 38th Voyage," "Women and Whales," Art of the Whale," "Can You Hear Me? Whales and Sound" and more.
Live guest interviews include ocean advocate Jean-Michel Cousteau, ocean explorer Sylvia Earle, authors Philip Hoare and Chris Davis, cartoonist Jim Toomey, artist Tom Freeman, photographer Brian Skerry, NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries Director Daniel J. Basta, and Mystic Seaport Executive Vice President Susan Funk. A schedule for all programming is posted on OceansLIVE.org.
