Oceana Announces Addition of Rogier van Vliet to Board of Directors
Chairman of the Dutch fund Adessium Foundation becomes newest member of largest international ocean conservation group
WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Oceana is pleased to announce the addition of Rogier van Vliet to its board of directors.
Van Vliet is chairman of Adessium Foundation, a privately funded public benefit organization that provides financial support to charitable organizations in the Netherlands and around the world.
"The decision to join Oceana's board of directors was easy. It's one of the most effective environmental organizations in the world," said van Vliet. "In only 10 years Oceana has protected 1.2 million square miles of ocean by winning key victories like the California shark fin ban and a national ban on bottom trawling in Belize. I'm proud to lend my skills to help guide the direction of this great organization and look forward to many more victories to come."
Since 2002, Mr. Van Vliet has also been a director at Multifund, a private investment company. Prior to 2002, he worked for the asset management company Transtrend. Mr. Van Vliet graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Business from Webster University in Leiden, the Netherlands.
"Van Vliet is a double threat. He's a trained businessman and an experienced philanthropist. He brings a skill set that adds yet another dimension of expertise to our already talented and diversely accomplished board of directors," said Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless. "It's the vision and strategy of Oceana's board that guides the direction of the organization and positions us to win even more victories for the world's oceans."
The board of directors is Oceana's governing body. The directors are responsible for establishing organizational strategy, budgets, and the direction of Oceana's campaigns. Since 2001, Oceana's directors have taken a science-based approach to creating policy changes around the world.
