LAWRENCE, Mass., Sept. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- OBP Medical, the leading global developer of single-use, self-contained, illuminating medical devices, today announced OfficeSPEC for the physician office market. The company's single-use vaginal speculum with built-in light source—which provides greater functionality and efficiency over existing disposable devices while eliminating the risk of cross contamination—is widely adopted by leading hospitals, health systems and community providers across the country. With OfficeSPEC, OBP Medical brings this same innovation to medical offices, including primary care physicians and OB/GYNs, at a price point that makes the technology accessible to practices of every size.
"We've seen widespread adoption of our specula in hospitals and health systems throughout the U.S. Similarly, physician practices clearly recognize the functional and clinical value of single-use technology, but often have a preconceived notion that these devices are more expensive than the tools they currently use," said Jeff Swift, CEO of OBP Medical. "To support this large and important market, we're offering the next generation of specula innovation at a price point that makes the switch to single-use an economically viable option for offices of any size. With OfficeSPEC, physician practices now can reap the same benefits once reserved for large institutions. We're excited by the traction already seen and look forward to supporting continued adoption by practices across the country."
In medical offices where pelvic exams and procedures are conducted regularly, the speculum is a mission critical tool. Many offices still use stainless steel devices, which require reprocessing (including cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and storage) after each use. Patient safety depends on proper reprocessing. Unfortunately, there is a growing body of evidence that even when manufacturer cleaning instructions are followed, so-called "disinfected medical devices" are not as clean as we would all like to believe. As a result, these devices become a vehicle for potential cross contamination.
To combat the problem, some practices have made the switch to disposable vaginal specula. While this is a step in the right direction, disposable devices still require a reusable plug-in or rechargeable light source to provide illumination during an exam. Per manufacturer recommendations, these light sources cannot undergo a rigorous sterilization process, so they are often put away without cleaning or simply wiped down and considered ready for the next patient. Lack of high-level disinfection makes reusable light sources another potential source of pathogen transmission from one patient to another.
OfficeSPEC is a completely self-contained and entirely disposable vaginal speculum—the device comes out of the package ready to use and is thrown away after a single procedure or exam. OfficeSPEC features an integrated, ultra-bright, single-use LED light source that makes rechargeable and plug-in light sources obsolete. These features eliminate the time and expense of reprocessing, as well as the unnecessary risk of cross contaminationinherent with reusable devices and light sources. OfficeSPEC allows clinicians to complete pelvic exams faster and more efficiently than ever before while delivering an improved patient experience.
"After 36 years of using metal specula, OfficeSPEC represents a significant improvement for my practice and my patients," said Dr. Raymond C. Lackore, Art & Science of Ob-Gyn in Virginia Beach, Virginia. "My office staff no longer have to scrub, soak and autoclave metal specula between exams or position fiber optic lights in preparation for patient procedures. Now, everything we need is at the ready in a single, self-contained tool that provides bright light with no cords or battery packs. Integrating OfficeSPEC into my practice was a seamless process and patients are impressed by our use of truly innovative technology."
Additional OfficeSPEC benefits include:
- Ultra-bright, built-in LED light source capable of producing peak power for 30+ minutes without generating any noticeable heat;
- Made from high-quality acrylic and adheres to the most stringent manufacturing guidelines to ensure the safety and comfort of patients during pelvic exams;
- Locking hinges for added strength and stability;
- Latex free, eliminating the potential to cause an allergenic reaction in patients;
- Available in both sterile and non-sterile versions and in small, medium and large sizes;
- 100 percent single-use—completely hygienic, requires no cleaning/reprocessing, eliminating the risk of cross contamination from poorly cleaned, reusable vaginal specula and light sources.
