OBGYN.net Presents Special Coverage of the SMFM's Annual Meeting
NORWALK, Conn., Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces that OBGYN.net, a leading online community for medical professionals specializing in women's health, will be featuring special coverage of key study findings and exhibitor presentations from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's 34th annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting™, that was held February 3-8 in New Orleans.
The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine gathers each winter for The Pregnancy Meeting to share the latest innovations in research and clinical care. Through educational seminars and research presentations, all levels of maternal-fetal medicine physicians come together to share wisdom and research to improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
Some recent highlights from the SMFM 2014 meeting include:
- Noninvasive Prenatal Testing Detects Most Chromosomal Abnormalities: New study findings suggest that noninvasive prenatal testing, which involves a simple blood test, can detect more than 80% of chromosomal abnormalities. This means that patients may have an alternative to more invasive tests, such as amniocentesis, that carry a risk of miscarriage.
- Personalized Prevention of Preterm Birth May Be Possible: Injections of one type of progesterone can reduce the risk of recurrent preterm births by about a third, but only some women, in hit or miss fashion, respond to this treatment. However, award-winning research has identified key gene processes that can help ob/gyns determine which women at risk for preterm birth will benefit from progesterone injections.
