Obesity Drugs and Therapies: Technologies and Global Markets
NEW YORK, Aug. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- This study determines the current status of the global market for drug and surgical therapies for obesity. The report covers gastric bands and balloons, meaning the devices that actually are meant to directly instigate weight loss; however, it will not cover the various surgical equipment used in bariatric surgeries. The report examines the growth potential for obesity therapies including drugs and procedures/surgeries with or without implanted devices over a five-year period from 2016 through 2021.
Use this report to:
Analyze current obesity therapy technology and the drug development landscape and the market's future direction.
Determine the current status of the global market for drug and surgical therapies for obesity.
Evaluate the growth potential for obesity therapies including drugs and procedures/surgeries with or without implanted devices.
Define and classify obesity therapy technology with respect to therapeutics.
Highlights
The global market for obesity treatments should reach more than $7.8 billion by 2021 from over $4.3 billion in 2016 increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7% from 2016 to 2021.
The bariatric surgeries market should reach over $4.3 billion by 2021 from almost $3.4 billion in 2016, at a CAGR of 5.0% from 2016 to 2021.
The FDA-approved drugs market should reach $2.9 billion by 2021 from $455.0 million in 2016, a CAGR of 44.9% from 2016 to 2021.
STUDY GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
BCC Research's goal in conducting this study was to determine the current status of the global market for drug and surgical therapies for obesity. The report covers gastric bands and balloons, meaning the devices that actually are meant to directly instigate weight loss; however, it will not cover the various surgical equipment used in bariatric surgeries. The report examines the growth potential for obesity therapies including drugs and procedures/surgeries with or without implanted devices (again, only the bands and balloons or other novel devices used in gastric band or balloon procedures; not the surgical equipment itself used in bariatric surgeries) over a five-year period from 2016 through 2021.
Anti-obesity medications are a growing global market with several new FDA-approved medications since 2012. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that in 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight globally and, out of these people, over 600 million were obese. Worldwide, obesity has more than doubled since 1980. Alarmingly, 42 million children worldwide under the age of five were overweight or obese in 2013; yet obesity is completely preventable with the exception of some rare genetic disorders.
A crude measure of obesity is the calculation of body mass index (BMI), defined as a person's weight (in kilograms, or kg) divided by the square of height (in meters). A person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered obese, while a person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight.
A key report objective is to present a comprehensive analysis of current obesity therapy technology including the drug development landscape and the market's future direction, with an aim to define and classify the technology as it pertains to therapeutics. The field of obesity therapies complements those in diabetes and cardiac care since comorbidities of individuals with obesity include high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and other vascular problems. Overall, revenues will grow considerably in the area of obesity care in the next decade and, in some ways, will parallel the continued expansion of Type 2 diabetes medications.
