Oakland Marriott City Center Unveils $22 Million Renovation of Guest Rooms and Suites
Downtown Oakland hotel is one of the first U.S. properties to debut new design concepts that reflect local area
OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Oakland Marriott City Center marks the completion of its stunning $22 million renovation with 500 newly designed guest rooms and suites featuring the international chain's completely reimagined concepts immersed with local inspiration and artwork.
In the winter, the new M Club at the Oakland hotel will be unveiled along with an exciting new Great Room restaurant and bar concept on the second floor. The Great Room will feature locally sourced items made in Oakland as part of its new menu, adding to the city's vibrant culinary scene.
The hotel, a landmark in thriving Downtown Oakland, is one of the first U.S. properties to unveil significant new design features with plenty of local art inspiration both inside and out. A renowned Oakland muralist was commissioned to transform an exterior wall of the property into a piece of stunning public art to be unveiled at opening events this fall, furthering the hotel's ongoing support of local artists and businesses.
New guest room and suite designs reflect travelers' changing needs, including 55-inch wall-mounted high-definition LED TVs, platforms beds with top-of-the-line mattresses and a color scheme that encourages relaxation, helping to make guests feel more at home than ever before.
The design concept, created by Paradigm Design Group, is described as "industrial powerhouse meets urban graffiti in one of the most culturally diverse cities on the West Coast."
With a playful nod to the bustling Port of Oakland, one of the busiest in California, bold artwork above each dream-inducing bed highlights the iconic cranes that punctuate the city's skyline and creates a bold focal point for the guest room. Crisp lines of the cranes create a strong architectural statement that brings to mind the famous bridges that span the bay. All of the artistic design elements come alive with a mixture of "stacked containers and brick walls" with exposed plaster and vivid pops of ochre and sunshine to reflect the native colors of The Golden State.
Inspired by shipping containers and industrial details, guest room furniture throughout the Downtown Oakland hotel features a modern play between clean lines with riveted accents and raw wood planes. The dresser and desk are branded with a hand-stenciled stamp of 1852, representing the year that Oakland was founded. Galvanized steel pipe rods are reflected in the leg details on all of the traditional and hanging lamps, while modern glass and iron shades highlight the balance of the lighting in the room. Bay Area suspension bridges inspire the design of the simple yet stunning custom wire art hangings. A free-flowing carpet pattern represents the movement of bay waters in neutral shades of soothing gray. Architecturally inspired fabrics that resemble the suspension bridge framework and golden pops of color evoke the sunshine and fields of native poppies that California is famous for.
Several suites have been selected to reflect a special theme — all with a local spin. The first will feature Oaklandish, Oakland's iconic brand of apparel whose sole mission is to spread "local love" by way of civic pride-evoking tees and accessories while creating quality inner-city jobs for locals and giving back to the people and places that maintain the city's trailblazer spirit. The Oaklandish Suite will feature a newly released line of Oaklandish bedding and other soft goods, along with items from select local makers. Guests may purchase items to take home as souvenirs of their visit to Oakland. Suites are set to be completed by fall 2016.
