Ubell was recognized for "exceptional leadership in scientific and technical online learning programming, international collaboration, and enterprise learning." Ubell heads NYU-Poly's online learning unit, NYU-ePoly, which offers courses leading to a graduate degree or graduate certificate in key technology fields, including bioinformatics, cyber security, computer engineering and wireless communications.
"Online learning has opened up extraordinary opportunities for working scientists, engineers and technology managers over the world, not only to expand their knowledge, but to stay current — critical advantages in rapidly changing fields," said NYU-Poly President Jerry M. Hultin. "We're honored to see Bob's efforts to make NYU-ePoly a leader in quality online learning recognized once again by Sloan."
Ubell assumed leadership of NYU-Poly's online learning unit two years ago. Under his watch, NYU-ePoly has grown from offering three online degrees and graduate certificates to a robust e-learning provider of more than 100 courses in 20 degree and certificate options. Ubell also spearheaded the development of the newly created Enterprise Learning unit at NYU-Poly, which provides education and training to company and government personnel, including SAIC, Goldman Sachs, AT&T and the New York City Department of Transportation.
In addition to a distinguished career in magazine publishing, including editor of the New York Academy of Sciences monthly, The Sciences, and American publisher of the premier British science weekly, Nature, Ubell is the author or editor of seven books and nearly 60 scholarly articles. His most recent book, Virtual Teamwork: Mastering the Art and Practice of Online Learning and Corporate Collaboration, was published last summer by John Wiley & Sons.
The 2011 Sloan-C Fellows will be recognized at the Consortium's International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando this November.
