The electric power industry's Emergency Assistance and Emergency Recovery Awards have been presented each year to EEI member electric utility companies since 1998. The Emergency Assistance Award recognizes extraordinary efforts undertaken in restoring electric service to customers in New York state disrupted by Superstorm Sandy. The Emergency Recovery Award was presented to NV Energy for its restoration of power in less than 20 hours after the start of the fast-moving Washoe Drive Fire, despite loss of 29 distribution poles and miles of electric line.
NV Energy was chosen by following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented Thursday during EEI's Winter CEO meeting.
"NV Energy's restoration assistance following Superstorm Sandy was truly remarkable," said EEI President Tom Kuhn. "Getting the lights back on quickly and safely following a major storm is never easy. Working through the industry's mutual assistance program, NV Energy's crews were essential in helping their fellow utility companies restore service in affected neighborhoods. Importantly, NV Energy's assistance also shows their compassion in helping others in their time of need. I congratulate them."
Commenting on NV Energy's service restoration work following the Washoe Drive Fire, Kuhn said, "It takes strong commitment, advanced planning and great execution and NV Energy responded with all three."
"On behalf of our employees and our company, I am honored to accept this award," said President and CEO Michael Yackira. "I'm proud of our employees who responded in difficult times. They worked safely to restore power to our customers, as well as customers of other utilities who were in need of support. Our employees are committed to providing the safest, most reliable service, even under difficult circumstances."
