FLINT, Mich., Jan. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- NuVet Labs, the industry's leading manufacturer in natural, human-grade dietary supplements for cats and dogs, is pairing up with a program that offers both shelter dogs and prison inmates a second chance at life.
Retired K-9 officer Joaquin Guerrero has joined with NuVet Labs to help hard-to-place dogs find a forever home. Guerrero works with Saginaw Correctional Facility inmates to improve the chances of adoption for these dogs. The program is called Iron Paws and it pairs dogs that are surrendered, saved or picked up as strays with inmates that desperately need a best friend. The dogs live with their prison handlers for six weeks, with each dog assigned to two inmates.
The dogs come from the Saginaw Animal Care Center and, without further training, have little chance of finding a home. After completing the program, most dogs are adopted. The ones that do not find an immediate home stay with their handlers in the prison until one becomes available.
The dogs chosen to participate in the program first have to pass a 'temperament' test. Guerrero works with the inmates to teach them how to properly train the dogs under their care. In return, the inmates develop the sense of responsibility and compassion that comes with having a pet. Guerrero calls it a life-changing experience for both human and dog.
Through the Iron Paws Program, these inmates learn a valuable skill that can help them find employment once they are released from prison. Inmates in the program have said that having a dog in their care makes all the difference. Their presence is uplifting for everyone. In February, Guerrero will introduce seven new dogs into the program.
NuVet Labs manufactures high quality pet supplements and is donating both its NuJoint and NuVet Plus supplements to the program to help improve each dog's nutrition as they train. NuJoint Plus provides maximum hip and joint support, while NuVet Plus, the company's flagship product, provides overall immune system support. Matt Simpson, COO at NuVet Labs said that "We are proud to continue to support pet's health and are excited about partnering with the Iron Paws program and the local community."
