NutriBullet Announces Recipients of Healthy Eating Program
Schools across Nation to Participate in Initiative to Increase Fruit & Vegetable Consumption
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Capital Brands, the manufacturer of NutriBullet, the popular nutrient extractor, has named five new schools across the country to participate in the company's "NutriBullet University," a 90-day healthy eating program designed to help school-aged children improve their diets by increasing their daily intake of vegetables and fruits.
More than 200 teachers and administrators hailing from every region in the nation submitted video applications to host the program in their schools. The following five schools were selected based on the health status of their students, their understanding of healthy eating challenges, their ability to administer the program, and the creativity of their video submission: St. Cyprian School, River Grove, IL; Paul R. Baird Middle School, Ludlow, MA; Garrett Morgan High School, Cleveland, OH; Urban Pathways Charter Schools, Pittsburgh, PA; and Spring Branch Middle School, Spring Branch, TX.
The program provides selected schools with a grant to purchase fresh produce over a three-month period, NutriBullet nutrition extractors (for classroom and home use), health screenings and dietitian support – a total package valued at $15,000. There is no cost to the schools. Each morning, students use NutriBullet nutrition extractors to make nutritious vegetable and fruit-based NutriBlast smoothies for themselves in addition to receiving information about the health benefits of each ingredient.
At the conclusion of the 90-day curriculum, research data will be collected as a group from this five-school initiative and reported to quantitatively validate the purpose of the program among the scientific and public health community.
Since the launch of the program in 2013, NutriBullet University has been working with schools in California, Alaska, Texas and Arkansas. To date, these pilot programs are demonstrating not only improvements in diets by increasing daily intake of vegetables and fruits, but also self-reported increases in energy levels, decreases in waist circumference, and improved perceptions of health. In fact, students at three of the schools last spring decreased their total cholesterol by 23 percent and increased their HDL (good cholesterol) by 59 percent over average, decreasing their risk of heart disease. Seventy-six percent of students who participated in the NutriBullet University program now feel more empowered to make healthy behavioral changes.
"By engaging directly with the foods they eat, we have found that students get a better sense of how nutrition directly affects their mood, energy, and overall wellbeing," reports Sarah Lefkowitz, registered dietitian and director of nutrition branding for NutriBullet. "At the same time, students are developing new healthy habits that will stay with them for years to come. It's very exciting to witness!"
