SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Nurx, the telemedicine company providing unlimited online consultations with physicians and seamless home delivery of medications, is commemorating the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day by offering its HIV prevention service line at a significant discount. This expands access to anyone who could benefit from Truvada for PrEP, the daily pill that is 99 percent effective at preventing HIV. After offering Truvada for PrEP for less than two years, Nurx is also announcing today it is the leading online provider of the HIV prevention medication.
In order to break down barriers to treatment and prevention, Nurx offers an at-home test kit that allows its patients to complete the required lab work (including STI screening) in order for Nurx health providers to determine if they are an appropriate candidate for PrEP. To mark the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day, Nurx will offer the at-home test kit for $30 from 12/1-12/7. By offering the test kit, which normally costs $199 for patients paying out of pocket, the goal is to expand access and drive awareness of the medication.
"We're committed to making sure everyone has access to the care they need, and World AIDS Day provides us with an opportunity to unite in the fight against the escalating HIV rate," said Nurx CEO and co-founder Hans Gangeskar. "PrEP is a highly effective at preventing HIV and is significantly underutilized in many communities, especially in areas of the country which are seeing the highest incidence of new HIV infections. Having control over your health is a basic right and something everyone deserves, regardless of how much it may cost."
Less than 10 percent of the 1.2 million Americans who may benefit from PrEP take the medication. Nurx is the only company that allows patients to consult with a medical provider and determine if PrEP is right for them, complete the necessary lab work, receive and fill their prescription, and have PrEP delivered straight to their door - all without needing to visit a physical health clinic, lab, or pharmacy. By offering an option for more convenient and discreet testing, Nurx is breaking down typical barriers to treatment including access, cost, and stigma associated with taking PrEP. The company is also dedicated to making PrEP as affordable as possible and works with many payment assistance programs to help cover the cost.
Nurx started offering PrEP through its telemedicine service in 2016 and is now the leading online provider of the medication. Nurx receives thousands of requests for the HIV prevention medication each month, and after introducing its PrEP at-home test kit in August has seen 10 times the amount of requests.
"By removing significant barriers to judgement-free and compassionate care with our at-home test kit, we are hopeful Nurx is poised to make a significant impact on the HIV epidemic," said Nurx Clinical Development Director Jessica Horwitz. "We're proud to play a role in not only helping people gain access PrEP, but also help more people get tested and connect those to treatment if they find they are living with HIV."
Nurx's at-home test kits are available to Nurx patients in 20 states and Washington, D.C. The company recently raised over $36M in Series B funding to expand the reach and scope of its platform to those who traditionally lack access to affordable prescriptions and primary healthcare services, and appointed public health leaders Chelsea Clinton and former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin to its board of directors.
