Numerex CTO Challenges M2M Industry to Press Forward in Standards Development During Keynote at Upcoming Global Communications Conference

Smith, Ph.D, will keynote the international M2M workshop during the upcoming IEEE Globecom Global Communications Conference to be held December 5-9, 2011 in Houston, TX.  Dr. Smith, who is the chair of the Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) M2M Standardization Task Force (MSTF), a group centered on the International Telecommunication Union, which is a specialized agency of the United Nations, will discuss status, trends and challenges of M2M standardization. His presentation will include perspectives from the recently concluded GSC-16 meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada during which M2M was a "High Interest Subject."  Dr. Smith is also the chair of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) Engineering Committee on Smart Device Communications.

Key points regarding M2M standardization, which will be addressed by Dr. Smith, are:

• There is global interest for M2M and M2M standards. Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) from China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea and North America are now actively working on M2M.
• The importance of international collaboration is widely recognized and currently underway.
• The diverse needs and requirements of the market verticals must be integrated in M2M standardization. This point was clearly highlighted both at GSC-16 and the international GSC MSTF conference hosted by TIA at the Georgia Tech Research Institute in September 2011.
