Number of Master's Degree Applicants from the Chronic Unemployed Grows at Touro University Worldwide
Students Opt for Education to Strengthen Marketability for Jobs and Gain Self-Esteem
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the U.S. economy continues to recover with unemployment lingering near 10 percent according to the U.S. Department of Labor, the chronic unemployed seek alternatives to remain marketable to employers while keeping their spirits high. One way these job seekers are staying engaged is through education.
Touro University Worldwide (TUW), an international university based in California, has seen growth in Master's Degree applications during the economic downturn. Many of the students are executives who lost their jobs but not their desire to make positive life changes by earning a graduate degree, while looking for work.
"Education, particularly earning a certificate or degree, is helpful in strengthening self-image," said Dr. Bernard Luskin, CEO and Sr. Provost of Touro University Worldwide. "It also demonstrates increased opportunity, and a healthy interest in succeeding."
Luskin, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist added that "if the long-term unemployed do not pursue alternatives in their job search, they may experience learned helplessness, a condition and syndrome that can develop from a constant inability to succeed in finding satisfactory employment." Symptoms include depression, a weakened immune system, and strained family relations.
TUW Media and Communications Psychology candidate Lorraine Palmer was laid-off a year ago after a long biotech career. She is now looking for work while attending online classes. "I feel better about myself and getting this degree makes me more marketable; a great segue back to work. I can go to school while I travel internationally and search for a new communications position back home," said an optimistic Palmer.
In order to combat learned helplessness, Luskin explained that the chronic unemployed need to redirect their energy through activities such as education. The positive experiences developed from education can cure the loss of self-image and can keep one's attitude positive.
