NSF 2015 Teaching and Learning Video Showcase Opens May 11
Encourages Public Conversation of STEM Education Innovations
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- TERC announced today the opening of the NSF 2015 Teaching and Learning Video Showcase with 112 videos highlighting research and innovative practices to improve STEM and computer science education. Representing initiatives funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the three-minute videos showcase a diverse portfolio of education programs that focus on a wide range of topics including robotics, engineering, genetics, biology, data mining, and computer programming among others. More than 265 presenters will be online throughout the week to answer questions from the public. In addition to participating in the online discussions, viewers can vote for their favorite videos through Facebook, Twitter, or email. http://resourcecenters2015.videohall.com
"Videos have incredible potential to engage the public. It is one thing to read about a project, it is another to see the project in action through the faces and voices of the students, teachers, and researchers," commented Joni Falk, Co-Director of TERC's Center for School Reform. "In the future, we can expect videos to complement scientific abstracts, poster sessions, and journal articles in order to more effectively reach a broader audience."
The showcase is powered by the Videohall.com platform, developed at the education nonprofit TERC. The platform is designed to take full advantage of video and social media to create a virtual meeting place that invites the public into a thoughtful, constructive dialogue around some of the latest innovations in education. The built-in functionality enables viewers to search and sort through the videos by topic or keyword and to participate in facilitated conversations that are connected to each video presentation. The online showcase is a model for disseminating education research and best practices beyond the written abstract or conference paper or poster session.
The showcase runs from May 11-15. Videos recognized for their excellence by the facilitators, presenters, and the public at large will be announced on May 18, and the showcase will be archived online.
The NSF 2015 Teaching and Learning Video Showcase is a collaborative effort of the following NSF resource centers: MSPnet, CADRE, CAISE, CIRCL, STELAR, CS10K Community, and ARC.
