WASHINGTON, July 12, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP®) is pleased to announce the availability of two new data tools for applicants participating in the Main Residency Match®. The Interactive Charting Outcomes in the Match allows applicants to compare their personal characteristics with those of prior year applicants who did and did not match to their preferred specialties (the specialty ranked first on the applicant's rank order list). The At-A-Glance Program Director Survey includes charts and data tables that capture specialty-specific program director feedback on the criteria used to select applicants to interview and rank.
"NRMP's goal is to help applicants assess their candidacy in the Match," said NRMP President and CEO Mona Signer. "These new tools allow applicants to manipulate NRMP data to assess the goodness of fit for a specialty and to gauge how program directors assess the importance of such factors as USMLE and COMLEX scores, the Medical School Performance Evaluation, and personal statements. Information that can help applicants obtain residency positions in their desired area of practice is good for the community."
The Interactive Charting Outcomes in the Match and At-A-Glance Program Director Survey can be accessed from the NRMP website. Both tools complement the complete Charting Outcomes in the Match and Results of the 2018 Program Director Survey published earlier this month. Copies of the complete PDF reports are housed on the Main Residency Match Data and Reports page.
About NRMP
The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is a private, non-profit organization established in 1952 at the request of medical students to provide an orderly and fair mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. medical residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors. In addition to the annual Main Residency Match® for more than 42,000 registrants, the NRMP conducts Fellowship Matches for more than 60 subspecialties through its Specialties Matching Service® (SMS®).
About The Match Process
Applicants submit to the NRMP their rank order lists of preferred programs, and program directors rank applicants in order of preference for training applicants. The NRMP uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to match applicants with programs using the preferences expressed on their ranked lists. Research on the NRMP algorithm was a basis for awarding The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 2012.
