CAYCE, S.C., Dec. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE: SCG), is pleased that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) today granted final design certification to Westinghouse for the AP1000® nuclear reactor.

"Receiving final approval of the AP1000 design reaffirms our selection of this technology, which has undergone rigorous reviews to demonstrate that its design meets all regulatory requirements," said Kevin Marsh, chairman and CEO of SCANA. "This is a major milestone on the path to receiving our combined construction and operating licenses (COLs) for the two new nuclear units at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station."
SCE&G and its partner, Santee Cooper, a state-owned electric and water utility in South Carolina, anticipate receiving COLs from the NRC later this year or early 2012 for units 2 and 3 in Jenkinsville, S.C., approximately 25 miles northwest of Columbia. Currently, about 1,000 employees are engaged in preconstruction work at V.C. Summer.
