WASHINGTON, May 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Who are the Cuban Five and how does their case relate to the future of U.S.-Cuban Relations?
Those questions will be discussed at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4 – by Martin Garbus, a leading U.S. trial lawyer and a key member of the Cuban Five legal team who represents Gerardo Hernandez, currently serving a double life plus 15-year sentence, and Stephen Kimber, the Canadian author of "What Lies Across the Water: The Real Story of the Cuban Five."
They will be in Washington participating in "5 Days for the Cuban 5," a week of events designed to bring attention to the Cuban 5, who were among a group of Cuban intelligence agents dispatched to Florida in the 1990s to infiltrate Miami-based militant exile groups believed to be plotting terrorist attacks against Cuba.
The U.S. government arrested the five agents, three of whom remain in prison after being convicted of crimes against the United States.
There has been speculation in diplomatic circles that Havana might consider releasing imprisoned American Alan Gross, who is serving a 15-year sentence for "crimes against the state," in exchange for the release of the remaining Cuban Five prisoners.
This Newsmakers news conference is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. in the club's Lisagor Room. The National Press Club is located on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building at 529 14th Street NW, Washington DC, 20045.
Like all Newsmaker events, this news conference is open to credentialed media and National Press Club members. It is free of charge, and no advance registration is necessary.
