NPC Newsmaker Program: European Elections and the Reshuffling of Top Posts: The Impact on the Transatlantic Relationship

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The upcoming European elections and how their outcome will affect the EU-US relationship will be the topic of a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference on Tuesday, February 11. Addressing the issue will be Jaume Duch Guillot, the European Parliament's spokesperson and director of media, along with Thibault Lesenecal, acting director of the European Parliament's web communications unit.

European citizens will be going to the polls at the end of May to elect a new Parliament. For the first time in the history of the European Union, the post of Commission President is also going to be affected by the outcome of the elections. Although citizens will not directly vote for the next Commission President, how they vote in the Parliamentary election will directly influence the Commission Presidency. Each political party will be nominating their candidate for the top job and an EU-wide campaign and public debate will be held from March to May.

The outcome of the elections could have a tremendous impact on the transatlantic relationship. Not only will there be a new Parliament and a new Commission President, there will be new appointments to the posts of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Trade Commissioner.
