PLAINSBORO, N.J., June 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Novo Nordisk, a global health care company with more than 90 years of innovation and leadership in diabetes care, will be presented today with a 2014 New Good Neighbor Award for its new LEED Silver certified US headquarters in Plainsboro, New Jersey. The company was given this award based on a variety of factors, including economic benefit/job creation, architectural merit, and community involvement.

The company opened its new US headquarters, featuring recycled and locally sourced materials, on Scudders Mill Road in April 2013. The world-class building is the result of a $225 million redevelopment project, which utilized an existing structure and sustainable materials to limit environmental impact. The campus is fully powered by renewable energy from wind, solar, and hydro sources–a feature that is expected to lead to a 30% reduction in energy costs. In addition, both public and private sectors collaborated on this redevelopment project, which created over 500 union construction jobs.

The redesigned headquarters showcases Novo Nordisk's dedication to its unique internal culture and aims to promote innovation, teamwork, and employee wellness. Features include a state-of-the-art cafeteria, a one-mile scenic walking path, and special quiet focus areas where employees can work effectively. Reflecting Novo Nordisk's expectations for continued growth in the US, the company's current plan is to occupy 75% of the building's total capacity, leaving room for future expansion.

Novo Nordisk, headquartered in Denmark with US operations based in Plainsboro, has more than 5,000 employees across the US. New Jersey has been home to the company since it opened its doors on Alexander Road in Princeton in 1982.
