November is Long-Term Care Awareness Month in Michigan
Education, planning are a must in order to prepare for care
BRIGHTON, Mich., Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Providing long-term care (LTC) doesn't have to be an overwhelming experience. Unfortunately, many families often don't discuss care options for loved ones until care is needed – which can lead to hasty decisions and limited care options that impact the entire family's financial, emotional, and physical health.
November is Long-Term Care Awareness Month (LTCAM) in Michigan to raise awareness of the care needed by individuals who require ongoing assistance with daily living activities due to a physical or cognitive disorder and to encourage families to plan ahead for potential LTC needs.
"Now is the time for families to discuss their long-term care options, not following a crisis," said Tiffany Albert, president and CEO of LifeSecure Insurance Company. "Waiting too long can be a very costly decision. Putting a plan in place ensures care can be received at home or in another preferred setting and avoids serious consequences that can impact an entire family."
Most people who reach age 65 will require some form of long-term care during their lifetime. Going without a LTC plan severely limits one's options for choosing where care is received. It can also erase a lifetime of savings and take a major toll on a caregiver's health, family relationships, and career, especially for women. While three years is the average duration of need, the average cost of one year of care in a Michigan nursing home is more than $93,000, according to a recent study.
Since 2007, LifeSecure has worked with the Governor's Office to designate November as LTCAM. By supporting LTCAM, LifeSecure is continuing its mission to advocate for proper LTC planning and the importance of finding solutions that work best for families.
