Novel Receives Controversy After Being Mistaken for a Video Game
VENTURA, Calif., March 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Dionykles is a fantasy novel targeted for teenagers and the young adult crowd.
However, people have bought the book assuming it was a video game because of its book cover, a satire on the video game rating system.
"I'm not the usual stuffy author you see on Twitter, and I wanted a book cover that reflected that," says the book's author, Redd Kaiman.
The cover shows the hero, Dionykles, with a box reading "Totes Magotes" in the corner.
"My main goal was to write a story for kids who weren't the most enthusiastic about reading, so I take influence from video games, ancient history, and mythology when presenting the story," Redd Kaiman said.
Redd says that he has gotten mixed reactions because of his decision.
"People were mad that it wasn't a video game. I actually wore a t-shirt of my book cover at the store and people mistook Dionykles for a Dark Souls villain," Redd Kaiman said.
Redd says he is hopeful that people will appreciate his novel.
"I really believe this book is one that teens can enjoy. It's about a boy who's forced to deal with loss and the responsibilities he has to take on because of that loss. Kids can tune out of reading in school because it can be hard to find something they can relate to. I hope to change that."
Dionykles is available to read here.
