Noted Jurist, Former University President Ken Starr Joins the Lanier Law Firm
HOUSTON, Aug. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Kenneth W. Starr, an attorney with a distinguished legal, academic and public service record, has joined the Lanier Law Firm in an Of Counsel position.
Judge Starr's vast legal experience includes his service on the bench as a Federal Court of Appeals judge for the D.C. Circuit. In addition, he has argued 36 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and served as Solicitor General under President George H.W. Bush. He rose to national prominence for his work as Independent Counsel for five federal investigations during the 1990s, including the Whitewater probe of the Clinton administration. Judge Starr's academic service includes serving as President and Chancellor of Baylor University and Dean of Pepperdine School of Law.
In his new role, Judge Starr will support the Lanier Law Firm and its clients in a range of appellate matters, as well as other legal issues and causes of special interest to the firm.
"I've known Mark Lanier personally and professionally for many years. I've always been impressed by his firm's commitment to seeking justice for individuals and the public at large," said Judge Starr. "During the past two years, I've worked with the firm on some specific appellate matters, and Mark and I decided that it was time to formalize that relationship. This was not a responsibility I was actively seeking, but is a natural outgrowth of our common interests and the good we believe we can do together."
Throughout his career Judge Starr has championed religious liberty and the promotion of a just society for all groups and individuals. Such causes also have been of ongoing interest to Mr. Lanier, who foresees opportunities to further influence this national and international debate.
"Not only is Judge Starr a great advocate of constitutional issues in the courtroom, but he also has been a tireless advocate throughout his career for those who face persecution based on their religious beliefs, regardless of the foundation of those beliefs," says Mr. Lanier. "Judge Starr could have his pick of national and international firms with whom to work, and we are honored that he chose us."
Over the course of more than two decades Judge Starr taught constitutional law at five law schools across the nation. For more than a decade, he served as Of Counsel and Partner with the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He was a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1983 to 1989, and also served as counselor to U.S. Attorney General William French Smith and as law clerk to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger and to 5th U.S. Circuit Judge David W. Dyer.
Judge Starr is the author of more than 25 publications and his latest book, Contempt: A Memoir of the Clinton Investigation, is scheduled to be released on Sept. 11 by Sentinel, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
Judge Starr earned his undergraduate degree from George Washington University, a master's degree from Brown University and his law degree from Duke University School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Texas, California, the District of Columbia, Virginia and the U.S. Supreme Court.
