CHICAGO, Jan. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Northwestern Medicine® recently launched the Center for Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Care, a multidisciplinary center offering patients all aspects of musculoskeletal care in one convenient location. The Center is housed at 259 E. Erie Street in a new one million square foot outpatient pavilion on the health system's downtown medical campus, home to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

The Center for Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Care offers expert care for orthopaedic and musculoskeletal issues, treatment for sports injuries and a specialized center for neck, back and spine. Featuring state-of-the-art imaging and operating room facilities, the Center is staffed by a diverse team of medical specialists including orthopaedic surgeons, neurological surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, physiatrists, physical therapists and a dedicated radiologist.
"Our goal is for the patient to see the right specialist at the right time – we'll have all the disciplines working together to provide the best patient care," said Terrance Peabody, MD, chair of the department of orthopaedic and the Edwin Warner Ryerson professor of orthopaedic surgery. "This model fosters an ideal collaborative environment where a more comprehensive continuum of care helps ensure more accurate diagnoses, better patient outcomes and a streamlined process."
The Center uses a unique model for spine care where orthopaedic surgeons and neurological surgeons practice in the same clinic and collaborate to offer enhanced patient care. The neurological and orthopaedic surgeons have access to the same images and can come up with a patient care plan together, said Peabody.
Designed specifically for the orthopaedic and spine patients – a population that often has limited mobility – the Center's layout minimizes the amount of walking and standing required for patients.
"Everything that the patient needs is in the same location including attached parking and an expedited check in process," said Peabody. "They will have all their care in one place from their initial appointment and imaging to any necessary therapies and surgeries, as well as rehabilitation and physical therapy."
Other highlights of the Center are advanced diagnostics and imaging, including capabilities to take full-body x-rays in less than a minute. There's also education space to prepare patients for total joint replacement surgery and a physical therapy and rehabilitation gym.
