Northwestern Medicine and Lurie Cancer Center Physicians Receive QOPI Certification
Northwestern Medicine cancer physicians get new three-year QOPI certification
CHICAGO, March 19, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Northwestern Medicine® Division of Hematology/Oncology has received a new three-year certification from the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). QOPI certification is only given to outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet the highest standards for quality.
"We are very proud to receive this recognition from ASCO and its QOPI program," said Leonidas C. Platanias, MD, PhD, director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "This certification is not only a reflection of the level of care Northwestern Medicine physicians provide, but the hard work they do every day to achieve it."
The QOPI certification is achieved by practices that undergo a voluntary, comprehensive on-site and documentation assessment using evidence-based quality care standards. The evaluation verifies that practices meet core standards that are consistent national guidelines in areas of treatment, including:
- Treatment planning
- Staff training and education
- Chemotherapy orders and drug preparation
- Patient consent and education,
- Safe chemotherapy administration
- Monitoring and assessment of patient well-being
"Our physicians share a strong commitment to providing high quality care for all our cancer patients," said James F. Brandman MD, medical director of the Northwestern Medicine Cancer Quality Practice and ambulatory medical director of the Lurie Cancer Center's outpatient Clinical Cancer Center. "Our continued certification through QOPI is a clear demonstration of that our continuing commitment to that goal."
QOPI also collects and analyzes data from certified practices, compares the data using more than 160 evidence-based and consensus quality measures. The information is then provided to participating practices, which can compare their performance to data from across the country to help identify potential areas for continued quality improvement.
