Northwest Names Mike Smelko Executive Vice President
WARREN, Pa., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael G. Smelko has been promoted to Executive Vice President in his position of Chief Credit Officer of Northwest Savings Bank.
With his promotion, Mr. Smelko will continue to supervise the Credit Administration Division, which includes the Loan Review and Loss Mitigation Departments, and to provide active oversight of the bank's credit policies and credit position. He is responsible for the ongoing review of the credit quality of the bank's loan portfolio including the risk ratings assigned to individual credits. Mr. Smelko will inform the CEO, Credit Committee, Chief Risk Officer, Chief Lending Officer, and the Senior Loan Committee of material concerns regarding an individual loan, the loan portfolio or loan policies. He also oversees the quarterly preparation of the analysis of the adequacy of the reserve for loan losses and the preparation of reports that evaluate credit risk for presentation to the Risk Management Committee of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Smelko is Chairman of the Credit Committee and Co-Chairman of the Senior Loan Committee. He continues to serve as a member of the Senior Management Team, and the Asset/Liability Management, Operating, Criticized Assets, and Marketing and Business Development Committees. He reports to the bank's President and CEO, Bill Wagner.
With eight years of community banking management experience in Pittsburgh, Mr. Smelko joined Northwest in 1997 as the Manager of the Bridgeville Office in Allegheny County. Following numerous successes in building the bank's business and reputation in the area, he was promoted to District Manager of the South Hills District in 2002. In May 2005, he relocated to the Corporate Headquarters in Warren to join Northwest's Retail Lending Division and was named head of that division in September 2007. He was named Northwest Savings Bank's first Chief Credit Officer in 2009.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Business with an Economics Minor from Penn State – Behrend in 1989. He is a 2000 graduate of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association Advanced School of Banking and an August 2009 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.
Mr. Smelko is a volunteer soccer coach for the Warren YWCA, a baseball coach for the Warren Youth Baseball League, and is a member of the Warren YMCA Building Committee.
He and his wife, Barbara, live in Russell with their children, Nicholas, Caroline, Luke, and Cassandra. He is the son of George Smelko of South Fayette Township and the late Claudia Smelko.
