Northwell Health Ranked No. 3 Health System in Latest Diversity List
NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y., May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Northwell Health has been recognized as one of DiversityInc's Top 12 Hospitals and Health Systems for the fifth consecutive year. Northwell moved up to third on the national list for its continued commitment to diversity and inclusion. The rankings were announced at the DiversityInc Top 50 event in New York on Tuesday evening (May 2).
"Receiving this recognition five years in a row from DiversityInc validates Northwell Health's approach to diversity and inclusion within health care," said Jennifer Mieres, MD, chief diversity and inclusion officer and senior vice president of the health system's Center for Equity of Care. "Providing culturally-sensitive health care and fostering an inclusive workplace is integral to the partnership with our patients on the journey to achieving excellent health outcomes for all."
DiversityInc's Top 12 Hospitals and Health Systems recognition is based upon CEO and leadership commitment; talent and workforce engagement and supplier diversity. Organizations also stood out for its employee resource group participation; manager participation in cross-cultural mentoring; executive diversity councils setting goals tied to executive compensation; and educating and mentoring diverse suppliers.
"Northwell Health is a great place to work. The health system promotes diversity and inclusion in its education initiatives, community partnerships, policies and hiring practices," said Joseph Moscola, senior vice president and chief people officer for the health system.
Northwell promotes several employee resources groups:
- BRIDGES engages employees passionate about embracing relationships with our diverse communities through a shared understanding of cultural values in the context of health care delivery.
- EXPRESSIONS serves as a resource to promote health equity and awareness of the LGBTQ community. Several Northwell hospitals recently received high marks by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation's 2017 Healthcare Equality Index.
- GreenBERG focuses on improving the environmental impact of our facilities by leveraging our team members' sustainability and socially responsible initiatives both in the workplace and our communities.
- VALOR engages and positively impacts military personnel, veterans and family members to ensure they achieve successful community re-entry, gainful employment, and overall well-being. Northwell Health was recognized in 2017 as a Military Friendly organization.
"Northwell Health attracts, develops and retains a diverse and skilled workforce through its Business Employee Resource Groups," said Michael Wright, VP of Diversity and Health Equity.
