Northwell Health Hospitals Named Leaders in LGBT Equality
GREAT NECK, N.Y., March 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ten Northwell Health hospitals and the health system's Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have been named as national 2016 "Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality" by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization.
Nationwide, 496 hospitals received the leadership designation, including 71 in New York State.
The Healthcare Equality Leaders were selected based on an annual survey, the Healthcare Equality Index, which identifies healthcare institutions that are leading the way in providing equal care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients.
North Shore University, Glen Cove, Huntington, Lenox Hill, Plainview, Southside and Staten Island University hospitals, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, Long Island Jewish Valley Stream and the Feinstein Institute earned top marks in four leadership areas: patient non-discrimination; equality of family visitation; employment non-discrimination and training in LGBT patient-centered care.
"This is a major honor for our health system and reflects Northwell Health's commitment to advancing LGBT patient care, research, and education within our community and beyond," said Michael Dowling, CEO and president of Northwell Health. "We hope that our efforts continue to have a positive impact on the policies and actions regarding LGBT health."
Northwell Health emphasizes compassionate, culturally sensitive and respectful care to patients and their families. This is achieved through the health system's ongoing educational initiatives, as well as classes that are offered regularly at Northwell Health's Center for Learning and Innovation.
