Northern Trust Receives ENERGY STAR Designation
CHICAGO, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Trust announced today that it has been awarded the ENERGY STAR designation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy for its energy efficient headquarters location in Chicago.
The granite and marble flagship building at 50 S. LaSalle St. has been Northern Trust's headquarters since 1906. As a result of continuous updating to reduce its energy needs and greenhouse gas emissions, receiving this award signifies that the building's energy performance now rates in the top 25 percent of facilities nationwide.
"Northern Trust is committed to environmental sustainability and we are proud to receive this recognition for updating our historic headquarters with technology and practices that will keep it relevant in a lower carbon economy," said Connie Lindsey, Northern Trust head of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Some recent enhancements to Northern Trust's headquarters include:
- Domestic cold water pumps were replaced with energy efficient Variable Speed pump controllers and high efficiency motors.
- Variable Frequency Drive (VFDs) controllers were installed on the air handling units throughout the building.
- 45-year-old fan motors that power air circulation throughout the building were replaced with new models.
The company headquarters is the second of Northern Trust's buildings to receive the ENERGY STAR designation. Northern Trust's 801 Canal Street technology center in Chicago received the award in 2007. Additionally, three of Northern Trust's building projects recently earned the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation: Offices in Bangalore, India, the Chicago area and Fort Myers, Florida, were recognized for the use of designs and materials that minimize environmental impacts.
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, focused on saving money and protecting the environment through energy efficient products and practices.
