PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., Nov. 23, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Shore Animal League America – the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization – asks animal lovers in the Tri-State area to help save a life this Thanksgiving weekend by adopting a shelter pet. The Animal League will be open Thanksgiving Day from 10 am to 6 pm and from 10 am to 9 pm throughout the weekend. A special $25 discount will be offered on all adoptions.
North Shore Animal League America saved nearly 120 small breed dogs from certain euthanasia through the Animal League's Humane Relocation Program. Most recently, the Animal League with the help of Los Angeles Animal Services and funding from The Heigl Foundation will transport 30 small breed dogs from Los Angeles to New York on November 23rd. The dogs, mainly Chihuahuas, will be evaluated and available for adoption on Thanksgiving Day. A second transport of 30 dogs from Los Angeles is schedule for November 30th.
"Everyday we see the gratitude in the eyes of animals that we have saved from horrible conditions and abuse," said Joanne Yohannan, Senior Vice President of Operations at North Shore Animal League America. "This Thanksgiving we hope to be able to fulfill our mission for these animals and find them loving and permanent homes."
In addition, the Animal League recently rescued 65 dogs from two commercial breeding facilities, commonly referred to as "Puppy Mills," in Missouri. The dogs, which include Yorkies, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus, Miniature Poodles, Bichon Frises and other small breeds, were evaluated physically and behaviorally, and many are still available for adoption.
The pets available for adoption also include cats, kittens, dogs and puppies that North Shore Animal League America has saved from municipal shelters in the Tri-State and across the country.
