RALEIGH, N.C. and PETERBOROUGH, N.H., Oct. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Through new math standards, students across North Carolina are discovering there is more than one way to solve a math problem. And, they're being taught multiple strategies for computation. But many teachers are struggling with teaching math this new way. To build their skills and confidence, Staff Development for Educators (SDE) has developed a two-day seminar presented by math expert Jana Hazekamp. The Why & the How: Number Sense Strategies for Success, will be held November 2–3, 2017, in Raleigh, NC.
"Students don't need a series of rote rules. They need to know the 'why' before the 'how.' This empowering seminar will not only present multiple number sense strategies to use with students, but also explain why each strategy works and how to teach it," SDE program developer Mia Leonard-Solis says. "The result is better math scores and a new attitude toward math."
All the strategies presented are aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Mathematics (NCSCoS) and will be of value to every teacher of grades 1–5, whether they've been teaching one year or 20 years.
An educator for 30 years and author of Why Before How: Singapore Math Computation Strategies, Hazekamp brings valuable knowledge and clarity to this seminar. "I'll start at the very beginning with single-digit numbers, and work through multi-digit whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Teachers will see the progression through the various grade levels."
Throughout the fast-moving two days, attendees will roll up their sleeves and engage in hands-on games and activities that support the strategies they learn. They'll play with new ways to differentiate them. They'll also explore exciting and easy-to-replicate ideas for using manipulatives to deepen student understanding. "In fact, each attendee—as part of their registration—will take back free place value disks, place value strips, and a rekenrek for their own classrooms," Hazekamp adds.
"Let's face it. For many teachers, math is not their favorite subject. This seminar will change that as attendees learn how to empower students to think critically, communicate precisely, see connections, and deepen their understanding of math. Who would have ever thought teaching math could be so rewarding?" Leonard-Solis says.
