North Carolina Electric Co-Ops Ready for Storm

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Carolina's 26 electric cooperatives are prepared for the winter storm traveling through the state today. Cooperative line crews have spent the last few days stocking up on supplies and equipment.

North Carolina's electric cooperatives are winter-storm-ready, with crews on standby across the state to restore electricity if the predicted winter storm causes power outages in any of the 93 North Carolina counties served by the cooperatives. As the storm moves into southeastern North Carolina, cooperatives are reporting outages, primarily in Brunswick County.

Because power outages are common in significant ice storms, the electric cooperatives have crews and equipment ready to begin restoring power as quickly as possible.  Primary lines serving hundreds of customers are serviced first, then the secondary lines serving just a few customers.  Medical and emergency facilities are given top priority.

Because the state's 26 electric cooperatives are located in the communities they serve, restoration crews are always on-site and can begin work immediately. If conditions are severe, the co-ops can depend on a nationwide network of cooperative line crews that are ready on short notice to assist with power restoration.
