North America's Building Trades Unions Applaud Secretary Hillary Clinton's Leadership on Health Care Excise Tax Repeal
WASHINGTON, Oct. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North America's Building Trades Unions released the following statement in response to Secretary Hillary Clinton's position on the health care excise tax repeal:
"North America's Building Trades Unions commend Secretary Hillary Clinton for demonstrating leadership on behalf of hard working middle class families and joining a growing bipartisan effort to repeal the so-called 'Cadillac tax' included in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Her stated position and willingness to work with Congress to prevent this tax hike from going into effect will spare countless families and their employers an increased levy that will amount to a pay cut for those who are still struggling to regain their footing after a crippling recession.
For decades, our members paid countless premium increases to help cover the cost of the uninsured, and did so without complaint as we worked diligently with our employers to provide this critical benefit to our members and their families, often times deferring wage increases to do so. Now, even with expanded access to coverage under the ACA, significant decreases in the cost of healthcare have failed to materialize. Without an adjustment to this policy, we will be hit with an unfair tax for having been at the vanguard of providing health coverage for generations when no one else felt the need to do so.
We again call on Congress to repeal this unfair tax on the middle class and hope that the Obama-Biden Administration will also demonstrate leadership and honor previous commitments that 'if you like your healthcare you can keep it' and to prevent increased out of pocket costs, a reduction in benefits, and cancellation of health plans for middle class families under the ACA that this tax will surely create."
