MAINTAL, Germany, Nov. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The NORMA Group, a global market leader in engineered joining technology, is supporting World Toilet Day, a United Nations initiative, by improving sanitary facilities at schools near its manufacturing plant in Pune, India.
Annually celebrated on Nov. 19, World Toilet Day is intended to draw attention to the fact that more than 2.4 billion people around the world lack access to clean water, toilets, washrooms and other sanitary facilities.
The NORMA Clean Water project in Pune calls for the renovation of sanitary facilities in 50 project schools. Twenty-five schools now have renovated toilets and washrooms separated by gender, including 14 improved in 2016.
"We are proud to be able to report ongoing renovation work at the Indian project schools," said Werner Deggim, CEO of NORMA Group. "Modern sanitary facilities improve the hygienic conditions at schools and prevent the spread of disease. With NORMA Clean Water, we are helping to improve the conditions at schools in the vicinity of our plant in India and provide access to education to more than 15,000 pupils."
In addition, the NORMA Clean Water project helps to educate teachers on the importance of hygiene and clean water. More than 1,000 teachers were tutored in 2016 and students were asked to draw charts showing how to use water responsibly. In addition, student club members visited with education authorities in Pune to call attention to the need for other necessary improvements.
After analyzing water-quality at several project schools, NORMA Group also determined a need to install filters to clean the water of pollutants and germs. At one project school mainly attended by Muslim children, the company also financed washroom repairs to allow students to wash their feet before prayers.
Working with the children's aid organization Plan International Deutschland, the company began the NORMA Clean Water project in 2014.
