Nonprofit Transamerica Center for Health Studies Offers Health Insurance Guide for Veterans
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to help veterans and their families navigate all of their health care options, the national non-profit Transamerica Center for Health Studies (TCHS) has developed the Veterans Health Coverage Guide that explains the types of insurance available and how they interact with each other. Recent changes in healthcare legislation means more health care coverage options for veterans and their families.
VA health care is the most widely known health benefit for veterans, made available by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Of the more than 21 million veterans in the United States, around nine million are enrolled in VA, and more than five million accessed VA care last year. However, 1.2 million veterans remain uninsured according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
"Despite strong participation in VA medical care for veterans, there remains a gap in coverage for this population. Many veterans are able to access more than one source of coverage," said Hector De La Torre, executive director of TCHS. "In fact, one in four veterans has more than one source of health care coverage, yet this percentage could be higher with more awareness of today's health care options for veterans and their families."
The Veterans Health Coverage Guide by TCHS provides an overview of the following types of insurance and how they work together:
- VA Health Care
- TRICARE
- Employment-Based Insurance
- State Health Care Exchanges
- Medicaid
- Medicare
- CHAMPVA
The guide along with a list of non-profits and support groups that provide services and resources to veterans, including specialty services for female veterans, is available at https://www.transamericacenterforhealthstudies.org/affordable-care-act/veterans.
