Nonprofit Global G.L.O.W. Joins 300 Girls at The United Nations for 'Girls Speak Out' Event on The International Day of The Girl
NEW YORK, Oct. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Global G.L.O.W., Girls Leading our World, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and member of the UN Working Group on Girls (WGG), will assemble more than 40 girl delegates representing communities across the US and Africa, Asia and South America for its annual Global HerStory Summit. The Global HerStory Summit culminates on International Day of the Girl on October 11, 2018 when Global G.L.O.W joins more than 300 girls to present at the 'Girls Speak Out' event at the United Nations.
UN Women's February 2018 annual report brings into focus some of the insurmountable circumstances faced by girls globally. Among other issues, the report highlights that "more than 50 percent of urban women and girls in developing countries live in conditions where they lack at least one of the following – access to clean water, improved sanitation facilities, durable housing, and sufficient living areas."
At a time where #MeToo and similar cultural moments have served as a rallying cry to address the concerns of women, Global G.L.O.W. joins the UN's Working Group on Girls to create a global platform for girls to voice their biggest challenges. The presenters at 'Girls Speak Out' include girls from a range of communities including both rural and urban centers. Global G.L.O.W. will bring girls to the event representing communities from across the U.S. such as Baltimore, Detroit, and Los Angeles and internationally from Kenya, Nepal, Brazil, Colombia, Thailand and Uganda. Participating girls will also join working sessions throughout the week and will share their experiences as change agents in their communities.
"If we are to create lasting, positive change in their communities for girls, we need girl-led solutions," said Kylie Schuyler, Founder and CEO of Global G.L.O.W. "During 'Girls Speak Out', Shreeya Dahal – a participant in our afterschool programming in Nepal – will share her story, focusing on the negative impacts of the dowry system in her community and cultural pressures discouraging girls to go to school."
While in New York, Shreeya and more than 40 of her peers will receive mentorship and support honing their plans to alleviate the challenges they face, along with microgrants from Global G.L.O.W. to implement their plans in 2019.
As part of the 'Girls Speak Out' event, the UN Working Group on Girls is calling for girls around the world to share their perspectives on life as a girl in 2018, using the hashtag #GenerationGirl as the group seeks to collect anecdotal context that data-based studies lack.
The 'Girls Speak Out' event will be available to watch live at: http://webtv.un.org/ or http://dayofthegirlsummit.org
About Global G.L.O.W.
Global G.L.O.W., Global Girls Leading our World, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit incubator that creates and operates innovative after-school programs to mentor girls to advocate for themselves and make their communities stronger. We accelerate girls' greatness today so that they can build a better tomorrow. We work with girls in 27 countries to overcome barriers and demonstrate improvement in five targeted outcomes: education engagement, self-advocacy, community impact, health and well-being and economic opportunity. Our programs are developed through the insights we learn from listening to the 5,600+ girls in our after-school clubs and summits. We develop and pilot unique programming in Santa Ana, California that we mobilize across our global network to meet the real needs of today's girls. We approach all of our programming with a proprietary group-mentorship mindset to foster interpersonal relationships between women and girls. We work worldwide alongside key stakeholders such as UN Women, girls' rights NGOs, universities, and local, grassroots partners to activate girl-driven change. Our largest project is the HerStory Campaign which supports and encourages girls to share their stories, advocate for themselves and create positive change in their communities through innovative after-school programming. We believe today's girls can and will change the world for the better, they just need the right support, resources and encouragement today. Learn more: www.globalgirlsglow.org
