NEW YORK, Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is in the process of compiling its procedural statistical data for the 2014 calendar year, which has already started to reveal distinct trends in the world of aesthetic plastic surgery. Due to significant technological advances in the cosmetic field, nonsurgical fat reduction procedures rose 43% in the past year. This is the first time that more than 100,000 such procedures were performed in one year since ASAPS started tracking it. In addition, the number of buttock augmentations, still a relatively new procedure, rose by a staggering 86% in just 12 months.
Michael Edwards MD, President of ASAPS states, "Nonsurgical fat reduction is a new frontier in the realm of cosmetic procedures. The rise in its popularity is indicative of the public's desire for nonsurgical alternatives in lieu of their invasive counterparts. Due to the technological advancement and efficacy of nonsurgical fat reduction devices, it's not surprising that more people are opting to freeze or melt away stubborn body fat in the comfort of their surgeon's office as opposed to undergoing surgery; however it must be noted the results aren't the same. Not everyone is a candidate for nonsurgical treatment as well. Many will still be better served from a surgical approach to include liposuction."
For the second year in a row, ASAPS statistical data shows a dramatic rise in the number of buttock augmentations performed over a one-year period. According to Constantino Mendieta, MD, an ASAPS member, 2014 was the year of the butt. "While a rounder, more curvaceous derriere has been in vogue for a number of years, celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian have brought the attention to the rear to an all-time high influencing more women to undergo buttock augmentation to achieve the hourglass look."
In 2014, over 10 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed by board-certified surgeons in the United States who are most likely to perform cosmetic procedures. This marks the 18th year ASAPS has been collecting multi-specialty procedural statistics.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is slated to release its full 2014 statistics in March 2015.

About the ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank
ASAPS, working with an independent research firm, compiled the 18-year national data for procedures performed 1997-2014. A paper-based questionnaire was mailed to 23,000 board-certified physicians. An online version of the questionnaire was also available. A total of 901 physicians returned questionnaires, of which 115 were retired or otherwise inactive during 2014. Final figures have been projected to reflect nationwide statistics. Though the confidence intervals change by procedure, depending on the grouping's sample size and the response variance, the overall survey portion of this research has a standard error of +/- 3.45% at a 95% level of confidence.
