NEW YORK, Feb. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) has announced the nominees for their 2018 NAMIC Vision Awards, presented in partnership with NAMIC-Southern California. Now on its 25th year, the awards recognize original programming that is reflective of the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color that best reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience.
With an outstanding 16 nominations, HBO leads the contenders participating in this year's NAMIC Vision Awards. ABC and Starz earned seven nominations each, followed by ESPN garnering six. Overall, 31 networks/distributors generated 81 nominations for NAMIC Vision Awards presented in 17 categories: Animation, Best Performance – Comedy, Best Performance – Drama, Children's, Comedy, Digital Media – Long Form, Digital Media – Short Form, Documentary, Drama, Foreign Language, Lifestyle, News/Informational, Original Movie or Special, Reality, Reality – Social Issues, Sports, and Variety/Talk Show. Original programs having aired from November 1, 2016 to November 30, 2017 were eligible for consideration.

Starz's "Survivor's Remorse" and "Power" tied for this year's top nominated programs, both earning a total of three nominations across three different categories. Erica Ash, Robert Wu, and RonReaco Lee received Best Performance – Comedy nods for "Survivor's Remorse". Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Michael Rainey, Jr. garnered Best Performance – Drama nominations for "Power", which was also recognized for Drama.
Additional nominations for Best Performance – Comedy went to J.B. Smoove for the HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm", with Universal Television's Lena Waithe from "Master of None" and Mindy Kaling from "The Mindy Project" also receiving nominations. The nominees joining Rainey and Jackson in Best Performance – Drama are: Jennifer Lopez for Universal Television's "Shades of Blue", Oprah Winfrey for HBO's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", and Orlando Jones for Starz's "American Gods".
In addition to Starz's original series "Power", ABC dominated the Drama category as it garners five out of the six nominations for its primetime series, "Grey's Anatomy", "Scandal", "How To Get Away With Murder", and "Code Black", along with their anthology series "American Crime".
The NAMIC Vision Awards extends eligibility to national, network owned and operated, and affiliates of broadcast networks; national and regional cable networks; local origination programs from cable operators; first-run original program syndicators; and VOD content produced for digital platforms. Entries were judged by a distinguished panel of entertainment industry executives. Judging is based on overall imagery (creative merit, originality, and presentation quality), sensitivity (the consideration given to cultural nuances), writing (the depiction of issues relevant to people of color) and the quality of acting in the performance categories.
