SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- MasterClass, the online education company that enables anyone to learn from the best in the world, announced today that Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman will offer the first class on economics on its platform. In his class, Krugman will help students to see the world differently by deepening their understanding of economic principles, enabling them to better understand society and history through an economist's perspective. The course outlines the foundations of economics, and applies those concepts to relevant social and political themes, such as inequality, international trade, monetary and fiscal policy, economic crises and health care. Krugman's class is available at www.masterclass.com/pk. Enrollment for the class is $90 for lifetime access, or $180 per year for the All-Access Pass, which grants unlimited access to all new and existing classes.
As one of the world's most influential economists, Paul Krugman won the 2008 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his groundbreaking work on international trade and economic geography. Throughout his forty-plus-year career, Krugman made it his mission to translate complex and abstract economic concepts into relatable present and historical political and societal dynamics. He's a famed writer and commentator, known for offering insight into global economic events in his New York Times Op-Ed column, and a prolific author and editor of twenty books and two hundred papers in professional journals and edited volumes. In addition to the Nobel Prize, Krugman is a recipient of the John Bates Clark medal from the American Economic Association. Krugman is a Distinguished Professor in Economics at the Graduate Center of City University of New York (CUNY), where he is a Luxembourg Income Study Senior Scholar and Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality Core Faculty Member; and is also a Professor Emeritus of Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School.
"We are at a time when it's never been more important to educate yourself about what is happening in the world," said Krugman. "Economics is such a big part of the issues that are affecting our society. I'm teaching this MasterClass to help you think like an economist so that you can understand how to get at the truth in your effort to become an enlightened citizen."
For Krugman, economics isn't a set of answers, it's a way of seeing the world. In his class, Krugman will teach students how to see the world through an economist's perspective. Students will learn the history, theory, and fundamentals of economics while understanding how to translate these concepts to present and historical political and societal dynamics. Krugman will dig deep into the causes and consequences of the financial crisis; dive into our current challenges with healthcare and discuss how we can solve it; and bring a human dimension to the discussion of wealth and income inequality, while demonstrating its correlation to corrosive political polarization. By the end of the class, students will have the tools they need to become better citizens and rational thinkers, and more capable, resilient navigators of the current political climate.
"Paul's ability to see through the confusion, anxiety, and partisan noise surrounding current events is exactly why we wanted him to be our first instructor in our economics category," said David Rogier, co-founder and CEO of MasterClass. "Paul's class demystifies economics by discussing critical socio political issues like taxes, inequality, healthcare, and economic crises."
