No Labels Poll: 94 Percent of Americans Say Congressional Inaction Harming Economy
85 Percent Support Reforms To Quickly Reduce Gridlock & Hyper-Partisanship
WASHINGTON, Dec. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American public overwhelmingly blames Congress for the stagnant economy and the gridlock in Washington, according to a new poll commissioned by No Labels. Eighty-five percent of poll respondents understand the urgency of reducing this gridlock and would support a reform package to address the structural problems plaguing Congress.
"Nine out of 10 citizens blame Congress for the most pressing problems Americans are facing," said No Labels Co-Founder Bill Galston. "We saw from the failure of the Super Committee that gridlock and hyper-partisanship have utterly impeded Congress' ability to carry out its responsibilities to the American people. We see good people stuck in a rotten system, and we have to change the rules to fix what's broken."
Eighty-nine percent of respondents believe that Congress is logjammed and 59 percent feel the No Labels strategy is the concept that would have the most immediate impact. This percentage is more than double the 28 percent who prefer conventional campaign finance reform, and more than four times the 13 percent who prefer redistricting reform. Sixty-seven percent were willing to go the extra mile and call their congressman in support of a rule reform package.
"The No Labels Make Congress Work action plan, which will be unveiled at a press conference on Capitol Hill on Dec. 13, will address an extremely urgent issue for the public," said No Labels Co-Founder Mark McKinnon. "The agenda is the only proposal today aimed at fixing the broken Congress, and it has powerful citizen support behind it. With congressional approval at 9 percent, we don't have any more time to waste."
The poll was taken through an online survey of 800 registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.
