"This is a somber day for Arizona. As the mother of firefighters, I join the entire nation in offering our sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the Granite Mountain Hotshots that were killed on duty battling the Yarnell Hill fire. They demonstrated the commitment seen so often in first responders around the nation: They were the first to run towards trouble, putting themselves in harm's way in the hopes of creating a better outcome for their neighbors and relatives.
"We are grateful for the service of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and grieve with their families, especially the family in my own community that lost their son. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with their families during this devastating time."
The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
