The Hon. Steven M. Fulop, Mayor of Jersey City, N.J., will receive the NJCU Visionary Leadership Award.
Steven M. Fulop took office as the 49th mayor of Jersey City on July 1, 2013.
The son of immigrants, Mayor Fulop was raised in Edison and graduated from Oxford University before beginning his career at Goldman Sachs, first in Chicago and then in his home state after buying a home in Jersey City. After 9/11, Mayor Fulop left his job to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
Upon his return, Mayor Fulop focused on his community, becoming president of two neighborhood associations. His unsuccessful primary run for the Senate in 2004 was followed by an upset victory in 2005 that made him the youngest elected official on the Jersey City City Council and the third youngest in its history.
Mayor Fulop holds a master's degree in business administration from New York University and a master's degree in public administration from Columbia University.
"We are honored to recognize these three visionary leaders at our Gala," Dr. Sue Henderson, NJCU president, said. "They deeply value education and throughout their lives have worked tirelessly to build their dreams while reaching out to help others who are building their dreams," she added.
The Gala will benefit scholarship funds at NJCU, a four-year, state university with a student population of more than 8,400 undergraduate and graduate students. Although undergraduate in-state tuition remains among the lowest in New Jersey, 85 percent of full-time undergraduates qualify for some type of need-based financial aid. Some 54 nations are represented in the student body.
Founded as a teacher's college in 1927, NJCU now offers 43 undergraduate degree programs, 27 master's degree programs, and two doctoral programs. In addition to its Main Campus in Jersey City, NJCU operates two off-campus sites—NJCU at Harborside in Jersey City's financial district and NJCU at Brookdale in Wall Township.
Leaders in the fields of business and industry, education, public service, and the non-profit community will be among the guests celebrating the three honorees at the "Building the Dream Gala".
