MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- MobileIron (NASDAQ:MOBL), the security backbone for the digital enterprise, and Entrust Datacard, a leader of trusted identity and secure transaction technologies, today announced that their joint derived credentials solution, MobileIron Derived Credentials with Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile Smart Credential, will be included in an upcoming project by the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) on Derived Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credentials.
Derived personal identity credentials provide multi-factor authentication for mobile devices without the need for passwords and hardware tokens. The DPC Project at the NCCoE will build on NIST Special Publication 800-157: Guidelines for Derived Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credentials and NISTIR 8055: Derived Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credentials (DPC) Proof of Concept Research to demonstrate how derived PIV credentials can be added to mobile devices so that they can be used for remote authentication to information technology systems in operational environments. This project will help agencies comply with the 2004 Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12), which calls for a common identification standard to promote interoperable authentication mechanisms at graduated levels of security based on the environment and the sensitivity of data. MobileIron and other technology providers are working with the NCCoE to develop practice guides that demonstrate DPC implementations.
MobileIron is the first enterprise mobility management (EMM) vendor that integrates with Entrust Datacard and that has a derived credentials solution in market. The MobileIron and Entrust Datacard integration provides the first complete Derived Credential Solution in the market provided by an enterprise mobility management (EMM) vendor.
"Our partnership with Entrust Datacard gives our customers the ability to improve the user experience while complying with stringent security regulations," said Sean Frazier, Chief Technical Evangelist, MobileIron. "Agencies can use this as a starting point to accelerate PIVD mobile identity rollouts that meet the highest level of security."
With Derived Credentials, government agencies such as the USDA will be able to extend their existing security investments, including personal identity verification (PIV) and common access cards (CAC), to mobile devices. The solution will provide secure mobile access to agency resources without requiring employees to use additional hardware like sleds or smart card readers. Government agencies are required to comply with government regulations and security standards, such as Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12) and FIPS 201. Derived Credentials will meet these standards.
"Federal government agencies are demonstrating their commitment to PIV-based credentials by implementing these solutions and we're very proud that our technology partnership with MobileIron demonstrates our goal to provide the strongest trust model for mobile identity and authentication in the market today," said Ryan Zlockie, vice president authentication solutions, Entrust Datacard. "NCCoE is working to apply NIST cybersecurity standards to address challenges enterprises face and we're pleased to be part of that effort."
