NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ten years after its first donation to Habitat for Humanity, Nissan today announced a $1 million grant to help build affordable, sustainable homes in partnership with families in need of decent housing and to support Habitat's disaster response efforts. Nissan's contributions to Habitat for Humanity in North America amount to more than $13 million over the past 10 years.
"Having a permanent home allows a family to realize stability and a sense of community," said Nissan Senior Vice President Scott Becker. "Nissan employees engage directly with those families by making personal commitments of their time and effort in Habitat home builds. This partnership is a tangible example of how we carry out our corporate vision to build a sustainable future for all Nissan stakeholders."
A portion of Nissan's contribution will be used to double Habitat's Mobile Response Unit fleet to 10 units, boosting its capacity to quickly support U.S. affiliates and their long-term recovery efforts following natural disasters.
"The generous donation from Nissan and the volunteers who continue to work alongside those in need of decent housing makes such a difference in the lives of families and communities," said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. "We are so appreciative of Nissan's efforts to help build homes, communities and hope."
This year, Nissan employees will volunteer to support Habitat affiliates in Canada as well as construction or revitalization projects in these U.S. locations:
- Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona in Phoenix, Ariz.
- Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley in Sunnyvale, Calif.
- Northwest Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta, Ga.
- Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity, in Aurora, Ill.
- Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County in Detroit, Mich.
- Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area in Canton, Miss.
- Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County in New Jersey
- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville in Nashville, Tenn.
- Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury in Franklin, Tenn.
- Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
- Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity in Dallas, Texas
Nissan will also donate five Nissan NV commercial vehicles or Nissan Frontier trucks to Habitat affiliates that make commitments to sustainable construction practices. Recognized as a U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for the past five years, Nissan equips its sponsored Habitat homes with many "green-living" features, including low-flowing plumbing fixtures, programmable thermostats, energy-efficient fluorescent lighting, high-performance windows and ENERGY STAR® appliances.
Nissan's partnership with Habitat began in 2005 to support response efforts to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf Coast region. Nissan donated 50 trucks and mobilized employees to assist in home building. In the last decade Nissan has donated an additional 78 vehicles. Since 2006, Nissan's employees have logged more than 70,000 volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity, building 63 homes across the United States and serving 569 families.
