Nine Texas Providers Earn Grants to Improve Health Care Access for People with Disabilities
Funding provided through Superior HealthPlan's Provider Accessibility Initiative
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Demonstrating a commitment to providing equal access to health care, Superior HealthPlan has partnered with the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) to award nine providers in the San Antonio area with grants to help make their facilities more accessible to people with disabilities The funding is part of Superior's Provider Accessibility Initiative (PAI) designed to support Texans with disabilities.
"In many cases, people with disabilities do not have the same access to health care as others," said Dr. David Harmon, Superior's Chief Medical Director. "Providing quality care to all members is our top priority, which is why we're proud to partner with NCIL to award these grants. We believe this initiative can help bridge the gap, paving the way for better access to healthcare for all Texans."
The following providers received a grant through this initiative:
- Life Choices Medical Clinic
- Melissa A. Walker, D.O.
- Dr. Michelle Muldrow, Institute For Women's Health
- Dr. Molly Shields, Institute For Women's Health
- Dr. John Adams, Institute For Women's Health
- Kings Medicine PLLC
- Dr. Jamie Nolan, Institute For Women's Health
- Foot Care Of Central San Antonio
- Leonardo Profenna, M.D., Connally Memorial Medical Center
The goal of the PAI is to increase the number of practitioner locations that meet minimum federal and state disability access standards. Providers in the Superior network selected for the grants will be approved by a local committee to use the funding for any combination of the following: removal of physical barriers that make access to their facilities easier; purchase of adaptive equipment, including accessible examination tables and chairs; production of accessible formats of printed materials; and equipment to reduce auditory or visual distractions for members with autism or other developmental disabilities.
Providers submitted applications to NCIL explaining their need for more accessible facilities and services. A local Barrier Removal Fund Committee then selected award recipients based on the impact of the improvements on disability-related network adequacy as well as the number of Superior members with disabilities impacted.
