WASHINGTON, March 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) is pleased to welcome Nigel Barker, world-renowned photographer and host of Oxygen's "The Face," to its board of directors. Prior to joining the board, Barker served as an EGPAF ambassador for more than five years.
"We are thrilled that Nigel Barker is expanding his role with EGPAF," said Willow Bay, co-chair of EGPAF's board of directors. "He has been an outstanding advocate for us for many years and we look forward to his continued contributions to our mission to end pediatric AIDS."
Barker first began working with EGPAF in 2009 when he traveled to Tanzania to film his documentary, "Generation Free," which chronicles the global effort to eliminate pediatric AIDS. Since then, he has been a tireless supporter of EGPAF and its work to prevent HIV/AIDS worldwide. Most recently, he served as the emcee for EGPAF's Global Impact Award Gala Dinner, which honored former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"I had a life-changing experience when I traveled to Tanzania. I witnessed both the devastating impact of HIV and the amazing progress that EGPAF has made to end this epidemic," said Barker. "I am honored to join the EGPAF board and I know that together, we can achieve an AIDS-free future."
Pediatric HIV is almost 100 percent preventable and has been virtually eliminated in the United States and Europe. Yet more than 700 babies are infected with HIV each day, almost all of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. EGPAF is currently one of the largest providers of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in sub-Saharan Africa and a leader in the global movement to end pediatric HIV/AIDS.
